Memorials - Walton-le-Dale - Our Lady and St.Patricks R.C. Crucifix

Higher Walton Road, Walton-le-Dale, Preston, Lancs, PR5 4HD
Ordnance Survey Grid Reference -
SD 56259 27926
IWM War Memorials Register - 18685
War Memorials Online - Not on site

The memorial takes the form of a plinth surmounted by a roofed stone crucifix. It stands in a small gated garden at the corner of Lady Place and Higher Walton Road. The plinth and crucifix are in a good condition, but the lettering has faded badly over the years.

The memorial has the names of 27 men who died in the Great War arrayed across two columns. The names are in the date order in which the men fell. Many names are badly faded and the memorial is in need of restoration. The plinth has the addition of the names of a further 13 men over two columns who perished in WW2. These names have fared even worse over time, possibly because of the way they were added. My transcription has quite a few question marks that I hope to amend at a later date.

SOCIAL
The WFA was formed in 1980 to maintain interest in the First World War (1914-1918). We work to perpetuate the memory, courage and comradeship of all, from all sides, on all Fronts: on land, at sea, in the air and on the Home Front. The WFA is non-political and does not seek to glorify war.
