Memorials - Samlesbury - St.Leonard the Less C. E. Lych Gate

Although at first glance, the two items here may seem to be separate memorials, the two combine as one memorial, the plaque that accompanies the Lych Gate being inside the church.  The Lych Gate is a stone and wood construction and provides the entrance to the church and churchyard. The plaque is of bronze.

New guttering was installed in the lych gate in 1977 and the roofing flags were repaired in 1990. The woodwork is given a coat of preservative each year.  The designer was J A Seward and the work carried out by builders Messrs Langham and Sons.  The total cost was £532.  As is noted on the memorial plaque, the fundraising for the memorial was organised by the late vicar of the church Reverend T. Wright Broadhead M.A.

The memorial was unveiled by a Mrs. Broadhurst on 20 March 1926 and dedicated the same day by Atherton Gwillym Rawstorne (1855-1936), the Bishop Suffragan of Whalley.

SOCIAL
The WFA was formed in 1980 to maintain interest in the First World War (1914-1918). We work to perpetuate the memory, courage and comradeship of all, from all sides, on all Fronts: on land, at sea, in the air and on the Home Front. The WFA is non-political and does not seek to glorify war.
