Memorials - Much Hoole - Wesleyan Methodist School WW1 Roll of Honour

Hoole Methodist Church, Moss House Lane, Much Hoole, PR4 4TD
Ordnance Survey Grid Reference - SD 47489 22802
IWM War Memorials Register - 42674
War Memorials Online - Not on site
This memorial is currently in storage within the vestry of the chapel. It displays a neat hand and in each corner the national flowers of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland are displayed. The edges are rough and torn in places. There is some damage from mould and the back of the frame is gaffer-taped up. The new minister, Rev. John Fisher, said that it has been in storage in the vestry for some time. The Roll contains the names of 56 men in total over two columns and displays the full name including regiment or service (excepting 8 cases). The men who died are denoted with a cross to the left of their name.

These Rolls were mass produced by Whitehead Morris & Co. Ltd. The company produced pre-printed lists of names, which caused some problems with errors, or in some cases (as in this one), the names were written in by the parish, church, club or organisation.  Other examples are the Dundee Town Council Roll,  the Drake Battalion Roll, the Reston United Free Church and the Eyemouth Congregational Church.

SOCIAL
The WFA was formed in 1980 to maintain interest in the First World War (1914-1918). We work to perpetuate the memory, courage and comradeship of all, from all sides, on all Fronts: on land, at sea, in the air and on the Home Front. The WFA is non-political and does not seek to glorify war.
