Memorials - Longton - Roll of Honour

St Andrew's Church, Liverpool Road, Longton, Lancashire, PR4 5AA
OS Grid Reference: SD 48472 25852

Imperial War Museum Memorial Database N/A
War Memorials Online - Ref: N/A

Copies are also held at Longton Library and the Longton Victory Memorial Recreation Ground

The original Roll was written by Mr. James HEALD, then headmaster of the Church School, situated on the present site of St. Andrews Church Hall. It records all those men of Longton who went to War, not just those who were killed. His son, James Herbert HEALD, died in 1916 aged 20, at the battle of the Somme. On 2nd August, 1919, the Roll was hung by the Church's gate as the Peace Celebration and Welcome Home Procession passed by. A strict silence was observed and men saluted the Roll in homage to the memory of those who had fallen in the war.

By the Millennium the Roll's quality had suffered over time and the Longton Parish Council commissioned a copy to be made by local resident Mrs. Maureen Beals. Further copies have been placed in the Library and at the Longton Victory Memorial Recreation Ground, the official war memorial of the village.

LONGTON PEACE CELEBRATION. The inhabitants of Longton and New Longton held their peace celebration on Saturday afternoon, when large numbers of people gathered to witness the various events. All the churches in the district had joined their efforts in organising these celebrations. The secretaries for the committees responsible were: - Mrs. Heald, Mrs. Bladon, Mr. A. Breakell-Moss, J.P., and Mr. J. Heald.
A procession of discharged and demobilised soldiers, school children, and local residents, led by St. Thomas's Boys' Home Band, marched from the Parish School through the village to a field close to the Wesleyan Chapel, where sports and games took place. About 14 decorated lurries were in the procession.
Tea was served to the children, after which all ex-soldiers and their wives were entertained to tea in a large marquee.
During the evening a concert was held, and the band played for dancing.  LANCASHIRE DAILY POST - Monday 4 August 1919

SOCIAL
The WFA was formed in 1980 to maintain interest in the First World War (1914-1918). We work to perpetuate the memory, courage and comradeship of all, from all sides, on all Fronts: on land, at sea, in the air and on the Home Front. The WFA is non-political and does not seek to glorify war.
