Memorials - Lostock Hall - St.James's C.E. WW1 Board

St James Church, Moss Lane, Lostock Hall, Preston, PR5 5BQ

An oak board erected 19 June 1919 by the congregation. It carries the names of 140 men and 1 woman from the church who died or served during the Great War. At the top of the board, the names of 23 men who died are displayed over four columns in large lettering.

Below sit the names of 117 men and 1 woman (Nurse Cassie Colebourne V.A.D.) who served. It is unusual in this area for women to be commemorated, although Lostock Hall has two such memorials. It should not have been so unusual, since our communities produced many such women who served as nurses and V.A.D.s during the war.

SOCIAL
The WFA was formed in 1980 to maintain interest in the First World War (1914-1918). We work to perpetuate the memory, courage and comradeship of all, from all sides, on all Fronts: on land, at sea, in the air and on the Home Front. The WFA is non-political and does not seek to glorify war.
