The memorial was originally sited on the forecourt of the the Methodist Chapel on Watkin Lane and was moved after the church closed.  In around 1998 or 1999 some alterations were made to the forecourt of the church to allow disabled access and the memorial was moved to the north east corner of the property.  A new location was sought after the chapel was vacated and put up for sale.  A plot was already in existence on Brownedge Road close to the junction with Watkin Lane which already had a memorial cairn erected in 1995, to celebrate 50 years of peace since the end of World War 2.  It was re-dedicated on Sunday October 21st 2012.

The memorial is unusual in that in addition to the soldiers who served and who fell, it also lists two nurses who served during the war.

The memorial is inscribed on three faces.  Names below are presented as they are inscribed and may not be in alphabetical order.  There are 11 names of men who died on the front face.  There are 34 names of men who served on the right face.  There are 32 names of men and 2 of women who served on the left face.

SOCIAL
The WFA was formed in 1980 to maintain interest in the First World War (1914-1918). We work to perpetuate the memory, courage and comradeship of all, from all sides, on all Fronts: on land, at sea, in the air and on the Home Front. The WFA is non-political and does not seek to glorify war.
