Memorials - Higher Walton - All Saints C.E. WW1 Roll of Honour

This exquisite Roll of Honour was not known to me at all.  It was brought to my attention by Sarah Yates of All Saints Church.  Sarah is currently researching all the names on the Roll and contacted me via the project Facebook page to make me aware of it.  It is a huge piece and is hung on the wall within the church.

The work was undertaken by Waterlow and Sons Limited, London Wall, London, E.C.  This company was famous for printing stamps and banknotes as well as more general printing. The company also printed numerous posters for London Transport.  Some examples of Waterlow and Sons work can be found on the London Transport Museum website.  A history of the company is also available via Grace's Guide.

The Roll Consists of 430 names over 6 columns. The men are listed (black ink) along with their regiment (red ink, acronym), with a cross (red ink) to the left of their names if they fell in battle. The title is arranged on two decorative scrolls at the top of the Roll in block capitals. The year '1914' appears in the decorative margin to the left, while the right margin has the year '1918', giving us 1914 to 1918. A prayer from S.John is arranged in a decorative space at the foot and immediately below this is the makers mark.

SOCIAL
The WFA was formed in 1980 to maintain interest in the First World War (1914-1918). We work to perpetuate the memory, courage and comradeship of all, from all sides, on all Fronts: on land, at sea, in the air and on the Home Front. The WFA is non-political and does not seek to glorify war.
