IWM War Memorials Register - 54961

Two separate memorials (Gates & Roll) on IWM War Memorials Register. Has been input on War Memorials online as one memorial and in the wrong location.
The War Memorial Gates were opened on Thursday, 29 November, 1923 by the Headmaster Lieutenant-Colonel the Reverend C. P. Hines O.B.E. and other dignitaries.

Brick gateway with wooden gates.  Central structure with a tiled and hipped roof.  This structure bears an inlaid tablet on one side (school side) with latin inscription and on the other face (road side) a plaque bearing an inscription in English.  This structure has a small gateway within it but is flanked by much larger wooden gates.  These are supported on the far sides by brick gate posts, smaller and simpler than the central gateway.
CONCERT IN AID OF WAR MEMORIAL FUND. With the object reducing an outstanding debt of £100 on the war memorial the boys of Hutton Grammar School, last evening, gave a dramatic concert in the school hall, which was very largely attended and proved most successful. Mr. E. Richardson, the accompanist and choir-master, had been responsible for the training of the junior and middle school choirs.
The juniors sang in unison the 17th century melody to "Hope the Hermit," while the older scholars gave a spirited rendering of Edward German's popular "Rolling Down to Rio." Master Kenneth Purves, a first prize-winner at the Blackpool Festival, sang "Vilianelle" (Eva Dell' Aequa) and "Lo! Hear the Gentle Lark" (H. R. Bishop), and in company with H. Ramskill sang the "Quis Est Homo" duet from Rossini's "Stabat Mater." Ramskill also received warm applause for his interpretation of Carew's "The Piper of Love" and "I heard you go by" (D. Wood). Elgar's pleasant "Salut d'Amour" was given by N. Whitehead as a violin solo, and the same boy contributed the song, "Passing By" (E Purcell). The preparatory form gave the unison song. "A Sad Story" (Rathbone).

The second half of the programme was occupied by the production of the comedy of F. Anstey, "Vice Versa." The story has been dramatised by Edward Rose, and in its translation to the stage has lost nothing of the humour and charm which characterised the book. The characters were as follows:- Mr. Bultitude's housemaid, L. Howarth; Dick Bultitude's body, R. Thurnhill Clegg, a taxi driver, L. College; Mr. Shellack, Merchant of Canton, W. Eastham; Biddlecomb, Coggs, Jolland, schoolboys. K. R. Stanley, M. C. Dobbin, and J. M. Purvis; Kiffin, Baker, new boys, M. S. Dyson and A. N. Haworth; Tipping, Chawner, senior schoolboys, H. A. Ingham and H. S. Johnson; Dulcie, the headmaster's daughter, J. C. Fish; Dr. Grimstone, the headmaster, J. Dixon. LANCASHIRE DAILY POST - Thursday 9 December 1926

SOCIAL
The WFA was formed in 1980 to maintain interest in the First World War (1914-1918). We work to perpetuate the memory, courage and comradeship of all, from all sides, on all Fronts: on land, at sea, in the air and on the Home Front. The WFA is non-political and does not seek to glorify war.
