1/8th Battalion King's (Liverpool Regiment), previously attached Royal Engineers Died of wounds 16 November 1916 aged 27 St.Saviour's churchyard, Bamber Bridge Bamber Bridge - St.Saviour's C.E. WW1 and WW2 Board 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal Henry Eastham Cornall was born to Matthew and Elizabeth Cornall (nee Eastham) in July or early August 1890. He was baptised 3 August 1890 at Fleetwood, Lancashire. Henry and Elizabeth had a large family, as was typical of those times, and Henry was the 8th child of 10 children born to the couple and the first boy. Matthew and Elizabeth were married 11 August 1877 at St.John's in Lytham, Lancashire.
At the time of Henry's birth, Matthew Cornall was employed as a locomotive driver for the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway. He had previously been a locomotive fireman / stoker, and before that probably a locomotive cleaner - the usual career path for an eventual locomotive driver. Sometime between 1892 and 1896, the family relocated to Bamber Bridge and lived at 4 Jackson Street in 1901. By 1911 they had moved to 241 Station Road. Both addresses are close by Bamber Bridge railway station and yard. It seems Henry was destined for a career with the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway before the war intervened as his occupation is given as engine cleaner. No service records exist for Henry, but we do know he enlisted with the 1/8th (Service) Battalion of the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment in Preston. The 1/8th Bn formed part of the 25th Division and we know that the battalion entered |
