Robert was born in BAMBER BRIDGE and was living in SCHOOL LANE prior to joining up. His mother's address is given as School Lane in the Navy death register. HMS Glatton was at Dover on 16 September 1918 when one of her magazines mid-ships exploded and ignited the cordite there spreading flame throughout the ship. The forward magazines were flooded but the rear magazines could not be flooded as flames blocked access to the controls. As there was an ammunition ship nearby, and to avoid the destruction of Dover, a decision was made to torpedo Glatton and to sink her. After an attempt by HMS Cossack failed, HMS Myngs was able to sink her at 8.15pm. 60 men were killed outright and 124 were injured of whom 19 later died of their burns. |

Notes: CWGC gives Frederick's date of death as 31 March 1918 - however two other important documents show that his date of death was 2 April 1918 and this is the date we have chosen here. The Register of Soldier's Effects says that Frederick died in Number 6 Stationary Hospital 2 April 1918. The hospital was stationed at Frevent from June 1916 to August 1918. The register shows credits of £13 6s. 4d., authorised 12 August 1918 and paid to his widow Edith, also a War Gratuity of £3 0s. od., authorised 24 November 1919 and paid to same. Soldiers Died in the Great War also shows the same date. This record also shows Frederick was born in Longton but he was in fact born in LEATHERHEAD and the family moved to the Hutton / Longton area sometime later. The address on CWGC for his spouse shows Preston (but this was after the war) and he was married in Ashton. His last known address is in LONGTON. Frederick was the brother of Thomas Cooke below and the brother in law of William Keen. Curiously, the Longton Roll of Honour has made no mention of Frederick and they do not include him although his brother is. |
